Tutorial: iPhone Windows Mobile Skin

UPDATE: I've updated the skin so that it now displays number of missed calls and number of new text messages. Have fun!

UPDATE V1.3: The weather icon now displays the current temp (aka the last temp weather watcher retrieved) instead of "73" all the time. That being said, the current version of the skin must have weather watcher mobile installed to work correctly.

UPDATE V1.4: Youtube anyone?

This has been tested and works in both WM5 and WM6.

I read an article on Lifehacker recently which described two different methods to skin your windows mobile phone to look like an iPhone. The first method uses a program that constantly runs on your phone to apply the skin, while the second method uses a combination of the mobile aps RL today and wisbar advance to apply the theme.

I started out using the first method because the Lifehacker author recommended it. I must admit it looked awesome, but it was highly unstable and I never got any notification icons for things like missed calls or text messages (they were there but behind the skin). Another major flaw with it was that since it was a program I could accidentally close the skin if I got overzealous while closing other open applications.

The second method was harder to set up, and it took me forever to get it look exactly how I wanted; however, many of the headaches and frustrations were caused by inadequate instructions which I amended and added a lot of information to for ya'll. The included background was also causing a problem, so I redid it and included it in the zip. With my instructions this method should only take you about thirty minutes to set up and the results are stunning. You will have a reliable and functional skin in no time.

I started by doing a hard reset on my phone (I have a AT&T 8125 Smartphone). Next I installed all of the applications and then I was finally ready for the skin.

Download the zip file of the skin and the programs used here.

If you don't already have it get a sync software for your phone here:

    5. rlToday should now be on the home screen. Click and hold on the home screen until an "Option" button appears. Click on it.
    6. Select iPhone as your skin and then set up all your programs under the Applications tab, using the pictures in the iPhone folder for the icons. Make sure you skip
the calendar, and phone applications. Those are built into the .xml skin file (they are animated or updated via registry references). So, from top to bottom your programs and icons should be:

      • SMS: blank.png,
      • Photos: rl_photo.png, \Windows\pimg.exe
      • Camera: rl_cam.png, \Windows\Camera.exe
      • Youtube: rl_youtube.png, \Windows\iexplore.exe Command Line: http://m.youtube.com
      • Finder: rl_finder.png, \Windows\fexplore.exe
      • Maps: rl_maps.png, \Program Files\GoogleMaps\GoogleMaps.exe

      • Web: rl_navi.png, \My Documents\My Midlets\Opera.ink
      • Media: rl_ipod.png, \Program Files\TCPMP\player.exe

  3. Get rid of the UGLY scroll bar:
    1. Windows>Startup
    2. Delete/move the battery and connections tray programs.

  5. VJ Toggle - make the softkeys vanish!
    1. The cab is located in: iPhone\Skin\VJToggleToday\VJToggleToday.cab
    2. Drag the Cab into the "My Documents" folder on your phone using sync software
    3. Navigate to the cab on your phone and install it onto your phone by clicking on it
    4. Probably need to do a soft reset to see results
  6. Installing the Dialer:
    1. The cab is located in: iPhone\Skin\Dialpad\iphone.cab
    2. Drag the Cab into the "My Documents" folder on your phone using sync software
    3. Navigate to the cab on your phone and install it onto your phone by clicking on it
    4. You must restart your device to complete the installation. Hit ok
  7. Installing the Keyboard and skin:
    1. The cab is located in: iPhone\Skin\Keyboard\HappyTappingKeyboard.arm.cab
    2. Drag the Cab into the "My Documents" folder on your phone using sync software
    3. Navigate to the cab on your phone and install it onto your phone by clicking on it
    4. Copy the Skin folder from: iPhone\Skin\Keyboard\Skin to My Documents on your phone.
    5. Go to Settings>Personal>Input and select Happy Tapping Keyboard.
    6. Click Options and locate the QVGA files in KeyboardSkin. P is for Portrait and L is for Landscape.
Finally, we're almost done!

Do a soft reset. You will notice that the bottom of the screen has what I like to call a "dead space." To eliminate this eye sore do a search in your windows directory for ".gif" Search through the results until you find a file named something like: "tdywater.gif" (mine was called "tdywater_240_320.gif"). If necessary rename the included "tdywater.gif" file to whatever your search yielded. Drag the included file onto your pocket pc to replace the existing one. Do a soft reset.

Congratulations: You now have an iPhone skin on your WM5 PDA/Pocket PC!!!

Thanks!!!!

Hi,

Do you know if this will work on WM6?

Jason2849 said...

I have a T-Mobile Dash, which doesn't have a touchscreen. Will I still be able to manuever through the interface using the control pad instead?

jenny said...

i'm not sure if it works in windows mobile six.

everything works without a touch screen except for icontact to my knowledge.

as a side note, if you guys try things can you please list which phones/os's this works with in the comments.

thanks,

i followed all the directions and still have the ugly scroll bar on the side. any suggestions?

How exactly did you setup the slide2lock program for easy access?

Jon said...

Sorry for leaving two questions, I also have a scroll bar on the right side of my screen (Cingular 8125) even after removing and replacing that gif file. I also am wondering what the program file is for the "settings" program as well as why does my weather icon say Satellite? Thanks

jenny said...

to add slide to unlock just make it link to it in rl today. i don't use slide to unlock so i didn't write how to set it up.

my settings program file links to my communication manager, this might be a good one to link slide to unlock to.

your weather thing says sattelite b/c the rl today .xml file is wrong. i have re uploaded the skin zip file with the correct verbage. re-download the skin zip file and replace the rl today theme folder and you'll be good to go.

hope this helps,
jenny

Jenney,

great stuf and very good work. Using an 8125 and the only problem continues to be ICONS. For example, under options changed the windows player to "IPOD", connected to VLC and picked the ICON. ICON shows fine and connects to VLC fine. But, the ICON on the desktop says "Text". "SMS" says weather, etc, even though typing in the new name.

Redownloaded at 2:45 PST, so have the most current.

If we can edit the ICONS, we're good to go!

Anonymous said...

Oh Jenney-

A couple of more ICON things. Since we can't edit the 3-4 pre-installed ICONS:

Calendar shows and works well.

There is what looks like a sync ICON that says photos under it. Clicking that goes to the comm manager.

Windows Explorer ICON shows and works right, but says Camera under it.

Changed the calculator per the instructions and gcalc works fine with the right ICON and text.

Word ICON shows well and goes to Word, but says Finder.

Excel ICON shows and works well, but says maps.

Interesting. Weather has an iPOD ICON, and goes to contacts.

Words for Notes and Settings show, but no ICONS and tapping doesn't activate anything.

And finally, clock shows and works well with the right label.

Either I've done something out of whack, or needs a little adjusting.

Maybe make all of the programs show on the options menu and let us change names, ICONS, etc?

Anonymous said...

One more time Jenney,

Went in and added SMS, txtman, and label under options-nothing showed up on desktop.

Anonymous said...

Does this work on a Treo 750 as well? I'm new at this and can't figure out what a cab file is.

jenny said...

you need to do the icons in order. so at the top of your rl today's list of apps yo should have textman with the custom sms icon from the rl today theme. next should be photos and then camera. i will do a screencast for you later.

Anonymous said...

I just went through everything and had a ? I can't seem to find the battery and connection applications for the toolbar? Any help there. Everything else looks great

jenny said...

for my phone the connections tray program was a startup item.

so go into /windows/statup and open each file with a text editor. look for the one that is starting those programs.

hope this helps,

I have had great success with this setup as well. A couple of notes:

Scroll Bar:One issue with the scroll bar I found was that when I put my 8525 in silent mode, the scroll bar reappears. It goes away when the sound comes back on. Maybe the x through the speaker icon makes it bigger.

Alternative to iContact: ssContact is a great alternative to iContact (also free).

I wish there was some way to have dialer load the new contact program instead of the original.

Thanks for the tip on the clock auto update. I had not seen that before.

All in all, these skins/mods have made my 8525 MUCH more user friendly.

jenny said...

glad to hear it william. i'm with you on the contact idea from the dialer as well. i'll try to figure it out and post an update if i do.

yeah the clock auto update thing was driving me nuts, i think it should be a standard feature.

is ss contact better? i tried it and liked icontact better.

make sure you check back every so often, i'll be posting lots of more mobile apps and reg hacks. i just got my windows mobile phone so it's getting it's brains hacked out.

How do you find the File Path and Command Line. I.E. when I create the Phone or Notes items on the tsk?

Got PPC 6700 here..still has scrollbar too.

Mark said...

Got it running on my 8525 but cant get rid of the blasted side bar.

Here are the reg edits to get rid of the task bar battery and com manager icons:
Change the following keys to value 0. Defaul value is 1 as shown below.

Remove the Battery Icon:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\Power]
"ShowIcon"=dword:00000001

Remove the Wireless Manager Icon:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\WirelessMgr]
"Keep"=dword:00000001

Once done, reset your device and the system tray will be removed.

Thanks for the hard work.

Ok, dude, your instructions are great, and I have gotten much further with yours than anyone elses.

I also have a cingular 8125 - so whats the scoop on getting the scroll bar to disapear. Did you have to edit the skin.xml? There is nothing to delete in the startup folder that impacts the scroll bar... Can you please be specific on what you did. I am so close, but that is throwing me of and I have researched for hours what to do....

Mark said...

Sorry i ment scroll bar when i said side bar... I am thinking that the background will have to be edited. That or shrink the top menue bar some how. Im with you ive been workin on it for hours and will post it if i figure it out.

Anonymous said...

i have a ppc6700 and i was able to remove the side scroll bar.

1. open the skin.xml file in a text editor (notepad)

2. change the height number in the first line from 279 down to 200.

3. save, add the file back via activsyc, and reload the skin.

jenny said...

@mark: sweet reg hacks, thanks!

@everyone having scroll bar issues: the comment above is exactly what i was going to recommend. please try resizing the the height of the skin and post appropriate sizes for your devices.

cheers!

The Missing Sync beta was a great find - thanks! I had used their earlier version with my Mac Book Pro, but kept getting contact errors. I had earlier purchased their competitor's product - PocketMac, but it is only in beta for WM5 and I could not get it to work at all. For now I have been sync'ing with Parallels and Windows Vista.

how do i get the buttons to show up along the bottom of the screen in the gray area, like where the phone button should go?

Sterling said...

Thanks for the detailed info. I got it running on my Sprint Mogul (HTC 6800 on WM6).

It's pretty slick, but to be honest, after all the work of getting everything installed and configured, I'm tempted to go back to the HTC Touch skin I had installed previously.

http://www.mobiletopsoft.com/board/2120/implement-the-new-htc-touch-interface-to-your-pocket-pc.html

It shows how many new text & voice messages I have at a glance and the weather module is much prettier and integrated into the Today screen. It also doesn't take up the whole screen so I can have calendar events and tasks listed right below it.

If there were a way to make some of the icons on the iPhone skin display more info (like # of new messages, etc.), it would really help with usability.

Thanks again for the detailed info and for continuing to provide guidance through these blog comments.

jenny said...

@sterling: your wish is my command. i added icons displaying number of new voicemails and number of new text messages. i'm working on a dynamic weather app right now for ya. please go here for an updated skin file:

http://www.divshare.com/download/1187768-8d1

(the skin file has been updated on the zip file, so everyone from now on will have these features if they download the zip).

jenny said...

my bad...wrong download link. here is the updated skin:

Sterling said...

Wow, Jenny you're good. I found a workaround before reading your prompt reply. I copied the SMS & Missed calls elements from the default skin xml config file & Pasted them into the iPhone skin file, tweaked the x&y to drop in the empty icon slot at the bottom right corner, and shrank the font size. So now in that last icon slot I have my little counts vertically stacked.

I'm excited to try your new icons as they will probably be much prettier than the way I'm doing it now. Also looking forward to your new weather app.

The way you keep adding stuff, this blog will be the iPhone skin headquarters of the universe.

thank you much...

aloha,
sterling

jenny said...

@sterling:ha, that's pretty much what i did, but i put them in the correct places: next to text and to the bottom right of the phone icon. let me know if you like it and any suggestions you may have.

the weather program might take a few days to figure out, but i am on it for ya!

version 1.2 of the skin is ready. i made the missed call and text message counters prettier.

http://www.divshare.com/download/1190901-c63
to install the new skin, download the zip and replace the ENTIRE rltoday iphone skin on your phone.

(i've also added two new icons - nes & finder)

Great walkthrough Jenny.

I've had to modify it a bit for size and what not to fit the smaller screen of my Treo 700wx. The results are pretty nice. I just tried to add the voicemail # to the phone png and instead of a number I'm getting 3 x's ( xxx ) in its place.

Any ideas why?

jenny said...

first off, which version of the skin are you using? the newest one has the voicemail feature already embedded.

but, since you are resizing your skins i'll let you know how to fix it.

open up the skin.xml and inside the registry key for your voicemail unread count add:

unknown="0"

(I put it at the very end right after the text color tag)

That's what forces it to display 0 instead of xxx.

Hope this helps,
Jenny

does service provider matter?
because im using the cingular 8125 with tmobile service.ive tried installing everything but it never seems to work. it just freezes my phone.

tonyv said...

brandon

i have a 8125 (with cingular) and it works wonderful. i wouldnt think the carrier would matter.

jenny said...

@brandon: i also have a 8125, but with cingular. service provider should not matter. try downloading the most recent skin.zip and using that. i just uploaded a new one with some tweaks.

@everyone: i'm currently working on the weather app (dynamic weather icon on the today screen) and working on a way to make an unread emails icon to work with gmail mobile. so keep checking back and PLEASE post any tweaks/tips to comments.

cheers
jenny

brandon said...

i think that the battery icons and such affect the skin because they are at the bottom, not at the top.

for some reason, the wisbar advance freezes my phone when i start it up

Craig said...

I'm using a mixture of all 3 versions Jenny. Here is my xml file...
http://www.jiggawatts.com/iPhone/skin.xml

Since I had a smaller screen I had to get rid of a few of the things to make everything fit.

My current programs:

Text, Calendar, Photos, Camera
Calculator, Notes, Maps, Weather
Web, Phone, Mail, Media Player

The unknown="0" is in the registry key line, was from the start, but the xxx still shows.

Perhaps I'll download the registry editor and see if that is the correct location.

tonyv said...

jenny

as you keep making tweaks i am having more questions for you..haha.

so i am up to the current version now and kinda did it backwards with the 1.2a then 1.2 but all icons are present and accounted for, however when i go to click on sms and phone nothing happens.. am i supposed to modify the xml page to map to the exe.

thanks again
tony

This post has been removed by the author.
Craig said...

my only guess for you tony is to make sure the links are correct to the programs that launch those 2.

for SMS my File Path is \Program Files\TxtMan\TextMan.exe

and for Phone, I'm using \Program Files\iContact\iContact.exe

tonyv said...

thanks craig
yeah i checked the xml for the path and corrected it to
windows\cprog.exe (the phone executable) and then changed the path to textman

still unable to work

tonyv said...

craig or jenny--

so when i open the xml using an editor, of course th epath is incorrect, so changed the path to what mine is on my phone, still no workie.. also the keyboard skin no longer works grrrrr lol

jenny said...

i'm guessing it doesn't work b/c your path is still incorrect. it should be:

\windows\cprog.exe

you're missing the first \.

also, be patient when you click the icons, no "gray box" appears with the dialer and sms, but they will load if you give the a chance.

hope this helps,
jenny

jenny said...

another update: i made it so the weather icon displays the current temp instead of always saying 73. it displays the current temp from the last time weather watcher was run.

that being said, version 1.3 of the skin will only work if weather watcher is installed.

hope everyone likes where this is heading.

Brian said...

Jenny-
Nice work on the skin! Nearly got everything working on my 8525, but after installing v1.2 skin, my SMS and PHONE icons are loading the calendar app. I've tweaked the skins.xml file every way I can think and checked the apps tab of Wisbar on WM5, but everything I can find is pointing to txtman.exe and icontact.exe, respectively. Any ideas? Thanks!

Brian said...

Anyone else have the problem where the slider app shows the wrong time? Time is correct on the PPC, but slider app shows time exactly 5 hours ahead.

jenny said...

I'd go ahead and dl version 1.3 (i just posted it).

version 1.3 requires both weather watcher and icontact to work properly.

download 1.3 and replace the entire rl today theme folder on your phone. 1.3 is pretty slick, the weather icon now has the current temp displayed instead of 73 all the time, and the phone and sms icons have missed calls displayed in a pretty little red and white circle.

give 1.3 a whirl, and if doesn't work drop me another line.

Jenny,

Great program -- I just tried it last night and you've already released 3 builds since then!! :)

Thank you for all the work you keep putting into this.

The only obvious thing on skin1.3 is that you have to do the "Finder" app AFTER the media/iPod ... for some reason.

Also, in spite of having txtman installed, the actual skin icon doesn't open it (or any program for that matter). What can we do to fix this?

I cannot get my SMS or Phone icons to click through to save my life! I've checked and triple checked the XML, but when you click on them, they very briefly flash the screen and then go back to the main today screen. I can access the iContact (phone) and the TxtMan through other icons just fine.

Ok, got 1.3 now. Still trying to get my icons lined up, but can't get the SMS, PHONE, or WEATHER apps to launch. What is the proper way to setup the rlToday apps (ie - which apps to include and in what order). Thanks Jenny for your hard work!

SMS, Phone, Weather, icons don't work at all in this new update.

The change in the weather icon was nice, but I'll probably go back to the previous build for now. SMS, Phone, and Weather are all kind of important!

jenny

the entire reload or just the skin.xml

Hi Jenny. Love the updates. The SMS & VM count is great. Got the NES icon linking to PocketSNES, and love the little shroom graphic.

Haven't tried your .3 w/ dynamic temp in weather icon yet, but will be installing it today.

Does anyone know how to turn off the sounds when scrolling through the start menu? I checked the system settings and the WisBar settings, and can't seem to find it. I'm sure it's something simple and I'm just looking in the wrong places.

aloha,
sterling

jenny said...

@tonyv: just a skin.xml reload and PLEASE let me know if it works or not so i can fix it if need be.

@sterling: glad you like the updates since you were the motivation. i'm still working on a better weather icon, but i hope this works for now.

i'm also wondering how to turn off the clicking noises, so anyone who knows please help us out!

jenny said...

@sterling (or anyone who can help): do you have a .cab of pocket snes (i have a mac so i can only use .cabs)? i just have poscketnesterplus...i need my tetris 2 fix!

tonyv said...

jenny

tried the skin xml only and no good still trying to reload all the icons and entire reload right now

jenny said...

@tonyv: thanks. let me know if that works. also, when you click the icons it takes a minute for them to load. make sure you are touching the pictures, not the text.

if these tips/entire reload still don't work let me know. i'll try to fix it later today/tonight.

jenny said...

try a soft reset after you reload too

tonyv said...

reloaded all icons= still no good and now the weather does not click.. i do see the temp has changed but can no longer click on it. so no sms, no phone and no weather now.. seems like something with the animation has mushed it up

jenny said...

do all the other icons work? sounds like i might need to load the beast on my phone and give it a whirl.

jenny said...

i'm using a different skin with more icons on it.

jenny said...

@tonyv: shoot me an email at jenny at hackaddict dot net and i will email you my skin.xml and some instructions. i want to see if the skin i'm using works on your phone.

sent you an email jenny

I like some of the others here cannot get SMS, Weather or Phone to run anything. I have an 8525

Timmy K. said...

I just installed skin 1.3a and the text and phone notifications work, but when I click on the Text, Weather, and phone Icons they do not come up. The phone registry editor would not sync with my phone, so is there any other way to delete the scrollbar and the battery tray at the bottom?

Bob said...

Hey "robg" I have an 8525 as well. We're you able to get rid of the scrollbar?

jenny said...

For everyone that can't get 1.3a, 1.3, and 1.2a to work, just go ahead and use 1.2. It should work.

Tracy said...

Jenny,

Like you, I'm using the 8125, and I was one of the people who posted last night after trying the 1.3 skin that the SMS, Phone, and Weather didn't work.

Just letting you know that even those of us with your same phone are having the same problems as everyone else.

jenny said...

thanks tracy, that helps a lot. this is really driving me up the wall since it works on my phone. can you download 1.2 and replace your skin.xml and let me know if that works? 1.2 is written differently and should work, and if it does i will update the skin so it uses that method instead.

please try 1.2 and post your results.

thanks to everyone who is helping.
jenny

jenny said...

has anyone gotten 1.3 working, or is it just me. PLEASE post if you have, i'm losing my mind here.

Tracy said...

Jenny,

Sure, I can try that -- do you want me to use 1.2 or 1.2a? Do you want me only to replace the skin.xml file, or the entire rlToday cab?

Sterling said...

Jenny: I tried to email you the PocketSNES cab, but I forgot that gmail doesn't allow executable attachments.

I downloaded from http://paqpark.nuclearfallout.net/projects/pocketsnes.php

aloha,
sterling

jenny said...

thanks sterling.

guys, hold off for a minute on the skins. i'm going to work on them tonight when i get home. i have a few ideas. for now i guess 1.1 is what you have to go with if you want working icons.

to downgrade just download the correct zip and replace only the skin.xml file in your rltoday iphone theme folders on your phones.

thanks for showing patience everyone, i'll get it figured out.

Tracy said...

Jenny,
Replacing the xml file with the one from 1.2 doesn't seem to do the trick. :(

Sorry, I was hoping to be able to give you some good news!

Hang in there though, I'm sure it's just some minor tweaking and I know you'll get it figured out.

In the meantime, I know we all really appreciate all the time and energy you're putting into such an awesome skin!

Don't give up!

jenny said...

thanks for the inspiration. i'll get it figured out tonight hopefully.

Thanks for all your hard work. I tried the 1.3a version and still can not open the sms icon or the phone icon. It will show the number of texts over the sms icon, but does not show the number of missed calls over the phone icon. I tried the 1.2 version but when i click on sms or phone it takes me to my calendar application.

Tracy said...

To Anonymous:

The number over the phone icon isn't going to show the number of missed calls ... it is only supposed to show the number of voicemails you have.

As for going back to a previous version, don't forget you may have to go back into "options" on the main today screen and rearrange the order of the apps, double check their paths, and in some cases also fix the icons assigned to them.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Tracy. Is there a way to change the path of the sms icon and phone icon because in the previous versions those were the ones taking me to the calendar application.

tracy said...

anonymous-

I think it depends on which version you are using. At this point, I'm a bit mixed up trying to remember which one came with what changes, etc., but to my knowledge, 1.1 and 1.2 both allow you to change the SMS and Phone paths ...

I know for sure that 1.1 allows you to, and I'm almost sure 1.2 did as well. So you could just use 1.1 for now until Jenny has time to look into the issue with 1.3 further.

jenny said...

@tracy: i should have a new skin a few hours. would you mind shooting me an email at jenny at hackaddict dot net so i can send you the skin first so someone can try it before i release it.

thanks,
jenny

Timmy K. said...

Thank you soo much Jenny this is awesome!! Youtube would be nice. You can watch Youtube with orb. Free download at Orb.com. I have my apps set up exactly how you have them everything is good, but the bottom row. I click the phone icon and it goes to the gmail, then where it says mail i have the web icon there and that goes to the web, then where it says web the ipod icon is there and it goes to my media player, but then where it says media i have nothing there.
